Buy An Espresso Machine For Business

The key to every coffee shop is, of course, the acquisition of the espresso machine. That is why we will give you a series of recommendations so that you can make the best purchase decision before starting your new business.

The first thing you should take into account is to make sure that the espresso machine is industrial, commercial, or semi-commercial. Never choose to buy a homemade espresso machine for a business, no matter how small it may be, these coffee makers are not made to withstand long workloads.

On the other hand, we recommend that you design the concept of your cafeteria based on the menu of types of coffees that you are going to offer. Marketing studies agree that the most successful coffee shops are those where the owners have placed special emphasis on the preparation, quality, and variety of coffee.

In today’s market, you will find a wide variety of brands and models and our goal is to help you choose the one that best suits your business.

Budget plays a huge role when choosing your espresso machine.

On the other hand, you should also consider that according to the price, you will obtain a series of advantages in terms of the design and technology of the machine.

For this reason, in this competitive market, you will find as many machine brands as existing models. From the famous and classic Italian brands to US, Spanish, German, American, and many other manufacturers. No matter how sophisticated or simple the espresso machine model you decide to buy, what you should consider is that this coffee machine has :

A powerful and good quality boiler.

  • That you can work the extraction of the coffee and the vaporization of the milk simultaneously.
  • That supports long hours of use, depending on the size of the cafeteria.
  • Several cups they can prepare.
  • Energy consumption and systems for continuous water integration.

That is why in the market you can find industrial machines designed to prepare many cups of coffee in a short time, this type of machine is ideal for restaurants where the influx of customers is high.

On the other hand, you also have the option of more semi-commercial versions, where your coffee production is less than 200 cups of espresso coffee per hour. They are a good option for a small cafeteria.

The best semi-commercial machines for bars or cafeterias.

Semi Commercial Espresso Machine Bezzera Magica.

This espresso machine, the mother of the E61 group, is one of the best on the market. Within its elegant design are a complex thermosyphon system, a 4-liter water container, a Joystick lever, and a 2-liter copper boiler.

Also, it has two integrated pressure gauges. The first allows you to see the pressure in the boiler, which is very standard on most commercial machines.

While the second is a pressure indicator while the ideal coffee is extracted to be able to control the quality of your espresso.

Its compact stainless steel design makes it a beautiful machine and gives off a shiny look that will suit your coffee shop.

On the other hand, the drawback of this design is that it is quite small, so you should monitor the water level of this coffee maker, although if it is a small business you should not have a problem.

Buy according to the type of espresso machine.

Another option that you can have when buying an espresso machine is to choose it according to its classification of which you can find, the super-automatic, automatic, semi-automatic, and manual or lever.

Now, although it is not difficult at all to choose the ideal coffee maker for your home or business, you must make sure that it meets the needs you are looking for and that it adapts to your lifestyle.

This is why, fortunately, the market is full of models that adapt to what you are looking for, and we are here precisely to help you make the best decision when investing in your magnificent coffee maker.

Besides, we advise you to take this decision very calmly since it is not always necessary to spend a fortune on the most expensive machine on the market to obtain authentic cups of espresso, cappuccino, or latte.

Finally, you should also consider the importance of the quality of the coffee beans and also invest in a good quality grinder. Otherwise, you will not get that high quality and flavor in your cup no matter how expensive that espresso machine is.

Super-automatic espresso machines.

Let’s start with the top range on the market. Super-automatic espresso machines are, as you must be imagining, machines made so that you only have to put them to work and they will take care of the rest.

Super-automatic espresso machines, also known as One Touch coffee machines, are very similar to automatic ones, only that they go one step higher since they automate even more all the coffee preparation processes, which means that grinding, filtering, the dose, and the extraction does it by itself.

This allows you to do other tasks while the coffee is brewing. Very useful if you are a very busy person.

A benefit of the super-automatic is that they incorporate a high-quality coffee grinder, which is a great advantage since you would be saving the money that you should invest in one of these devices.

Another of the peculiarities of these machines is the number of options to make different types of coffee, some even allow you to create your personalized recipes.

Super-automatic vs semi-automatic espresso machines.

Exploring the various espresso machine options can be a bit disorienting, as each type offers a set of features and benefits that can be difficult to differentiate, especially if you don’t have much experience with the subject.

Therefore, we are going to try to help you solve this problem. The espresso coffee machine semi-automatic is the kind of coffee that should intervene in the part of the process. This means that you must control the flow of the water in each coffee extraction. It is usually done by pressing a button to start the extraction and again pressing it to finish.

What is the difference?

The difference between the super-automatic espresso machines and the semi-automatic ones is that with the first type you only have to turn on the coffee machine and it will take care of all the work, with the semi-automatic it must be present and involve you in the extraction to be adequate.

What is the main advantage?

More control in the preparation variables, especially in the preparation of milk-based coffees, as well as programming functions and automatic switching on at certain times of the day.

With super-automatic coffee machines you don’t have to be attentive to the preparation, you just have to enjoy your delicious cup of coffee.

Despite these benefits, semi-automatic espresso machines tend to sell more and this has to do with, in addition to their excellent value for money, that coffee lovers enjoy feeling part of the production process, as well as learning what they can obtain.

On the other hand, with super-automatic espresso machines, you would be paying a little more for the comfort and autonomy they can provide.

Manual or piston espresso machine.

If it is the manual espresso machines there is no type of automation, that is, the entire coffee-making process is controlled by the user. Though it is the classic Italian machine, it is the purest and most original way to make a traditional espresso.

Most purist coffee lovers enjoy making coffee this way. Since it allows them to make the combinations, they like the most, but it requires a high learning curve and a lot of experience to achieve a perfect extraction.

This is why the traditionalists defend the manual machine arguing that, once the technique is achieved, these machines will give you the best espresso since you control every part of the preparation process. It adds a more unique and classic look, which makes them more attractive from an aesthetic point of view.

Semi-automatic vs manual coffee makers.

The main difference lies in the way of preparation, both are excellent coffee makers that will give you a good espresso extraction if you know how to use the correct technique. Investing in a manual espresso machine means that you want to enjoy and have full control while brewing your espresso.

On the other hand, semi-automatic coffee makers are ideal if you want to dispense with certain factors and allow technology to help you a bit during the process, while you take control of the coffee extraction.

In this way, we consider that one is not better than the other, both allow you to enjoy a wonderful cup of espresso coffee. Fortunately, you can find many brands and models of coffee makers to make espresso coffee with options that suit your tastes and requirements.

What is the main advantage?

If you enjoy the process, you will always want to do more.

They are more eco-friendly than the rest of the types of coffee makers.

Once the technique is perfected, the quality of your espresso will be a real wonder.

You are probably not looking for a coffee machine in terms of process automation it can offer, but rather in the functioning of the heart itself, and the limits that it can offer you depending on how the interior of an espresso machine is.

Buy a single-boiler espresso machine.

It is the main reason for choosing a boiler espresso machine that they are much cheaper than the following models. So they are also ideal compact machines for a small kitchen. And it is easy that they can heat up quickly.

How do these machines work?

The function of a boiler is to heat the water in the machine, which has two main uses, to extract the coffee, and to steam the milk. This allows you to have control over the preparations of cappuccinos, coffee with milk, and other varieties of coffee preparation.

The boiler which has a water tank is usually made of Copper. We can give them thanks for their ability to efficiently retain heat and maintain a stable temperature. So it is the most common material to use. Besides, you can find this type of material in most, if not all, traditional Italian espresso machines.

It is stainless steel. So this machine manufacturing is more expensive but it is also common to find machines with this type of material. Although there is evidence showing that it does not retain heat as well as copper, some people feel that stainless steel is safer for their health than copper.

At last, we have this material making this machine that is less common in espresso machines but cheaper.

The boiler is the system that has always been used to heat water in professional coffee makers. Generating a stable temperature is very important for the extraction of a good coffee since it can alter its texture and flavor, so its role is fundamental.

However, these machines with a single boiler cannot generate steam while they are extracting coffee (as do those with a double boiler). So they must pause since the temperature for both processes is different.

Why buy a simple boiler espresso machine.

These coffee makers are easy to operate when preparing a coffee, showing off your barista skills with your partner, family, and friends. Besides, they offer you a series of advantages to making your life easier:

These coffee maker machines are much cheaper. And they are a simple design that is excellent for the average home user.

The constant temperature will always be kept at the same temperature.

They are easy to clean, the boiler and other parts can be removed for good maintenance.

They can be repaired as their parts are easy to find and replace. Of course, if you are not sure how to repair it properly, it is best to call a specialized person.

We could go on with a lot of advantages and reasons to choose a simple boiler espresso machine, but if you identify with the ones we have mentioned, then this is the type you should choose.

Buy a double-boiler espresso machine.

It is mostly the type of coffee maker most preferred by home coffee lovers. It is a very simple reason – nobody likes to wait! and is that double boiler machines allow you to extract the coffee while heating the milk.

This gives it a huge advantage over boiler coffee makers and possibly makes it the most efficient, accurate, and low-cost setup of the three types of espresso machines you can buy today.

How do these machines work?

These machines have two independent boilers and each one with its controller, one of them is exclusively for the extraction of coffee which must reach a temperature of 93ºC, while the second heat the water until reaching the vaporization point that is 100 ° C.

Besides, many of these coffee makers integrate individual thermostats for each boiler, allowing greater precision when heating the water to extract all the flavors from the coffee bean and create a rich, shiny milk froth.

Why should you buy one?

There are a ton of reasons why you should choose a double boiler machine, but the ones that I find most relevant are the following:

Independent temperature control in both boilers, allowing more consistency and stability during coffee extraction and milk steaming.

You don’t have to wait between extracting the coffee and heating the milk.

So you can learn much better about coffee and its preparation techniques.

With this, you have everything you need to start enjoying a glorious homemade espresso. On the other hand, double boiler coffee makers are ideal for small, fast-paced coffee shops where customers request variety in coffee preparations.

Single vs double boiler.

Both machines have their potentialities and slight differences, and they will adapt according to what you are looking for, but they will not affect the taste of your coffee.

What is the difference between them?

The most obvious difference is the number of boilers. While that of a boiler has a single water tank, this has to be used both to prepare water for coffee and to generate steam for milk-based beverages, which causes a delay between each process.

The double boiler, on the other hand, has two water containers that allow the coffee to be extracted independently of the milk vaporization. This means that there will no longer be a delay in making your cappuccino or latte.

What is the main advantage?

The great advantage of a double-boiler espresso machine is that the wait in preparation is much less since you can control the temperature separately for each water tank.

This is important because different temperatures are required to extract the flavors of the coffee and to achieve correct vaporization of the milk.

Of course, this can also be achieved with a simple boiler, but you will have to wait for the machine to change the water temperature, and we know that you do not like waiting to enjoy your delicious cup of coffee.

Buy a heat exchanger espresso machine.

Professional coffee machines have evolved to adapt to the comfort of their consumers. The machine’s espresso heat exchanger, or heat exchange system, also has just one boiler which we discussed above, but with a great advantage.

Unlike the single boiler coffee makers, these have an additional tube inside the boiler that allows you to steam the milk and extract the espresso at the same time, just like a double boiler machine.

This system, by dispensing with a second boiler, allows espresso heat exchanger machines to be designed more compactly, and in general, cheaper than a double-boiler espresso machine.

How does this system work?

This system is created to overcome the limitations inherent in machines that have a single boiler. As its name implies, it works with a heat exchange system, which is borrowed from the steam boiler to heat the water to different temperatures.

In this type of machine, the espresso preparation water is extracted through a copper pipe that runs through the boiler. This works by calibrating the diameter and size of the pipe to control and guarantee the ideal water temperature for coffee extraction.

As it flows through the pipe, the water reaches the ideal temperature, which is extremely important, since the difference between the extraction and vaporization of the milk is different.

On the other hand, by only being able to modify the steam in the boiler, it means that you do not have direct control over the temperature of the water, which could be a disadvantage for you if you are used to controlling every aspect of the machine.

Why buy a heat exchanger espresso machine.

Choosing your espresso machine correctly is important to make a glorious coffee at home, or to satisfy customers in your coffee shop. And although you could get good results with the previous boiler models, these are some of the strengths of an HX espresso machine :

Besides, they are excellent machines for when you do not have much space, if you have a small business you can use a coffee machine with heat exchange to solve the inconvenience of space.

Then they are generally cheaper because one pipe is much cheaper to manufacture than a second boiler.

So,they use less energy as it only heats one boiler.

The water for the preparation of your espresso is fresher, since it is extracted directly from the water tank and not from a boiler.

They work very well for coffee shops with a small volume of consumption.

Its maintenance and repair are much cheaper than a double boiler.

Heat exchanger vs dual boilers.

Although each design is valid and useful depending on what you are looking for, it is important to know the strengths and limitations of the type of espresso machine you are going to buy. Otherwise, you could make a costly mistake when choosing a machine with features that you will not need, or choosing one that falls short according to your needs.

It can be said that a machine with a heat exchange system is an improved version of a simple boiler coffee maker. They are inexpensive and with it, you can work the coffee and heat the milk at the same time.

They are usually very small, so only one person can be working on them, but if it is due to lack of space, this is the machine that works great for you.

The machine’s double boiler is slightly larger, because it has two completely separate tanks one of the other, controlling independently making coffee and creating steam, and usually more expensive than an espresso machine heat exchanger.

What is the main advantage?

The main advantage of an HX espresso machine is the price, which is much more accessible than that of a double boiler machine. They are also much faster since they only have to heat a single boiler, while in the double one you have to wait for both.

This makes it a good option for small venues since it gives an excellent yield, and very useful if you like to prepare many cappuccinos or other milk-based drinks.

How to choose an espresso machine.

The choice of your espresso machine will not only depend on its price but also your decision based on your experience. So you are going to give it the type of use.

Therefore, buying an espresso machine for personal use will not be the same as buying one for your coffee shop business.

For this reason, before choosing your espresso machine, I think you should start by asking yourself the following questions:

What do you want to do with your espresso machine?

We refer to what use you are going to give it, do you need it for your home, or are you thinking of opening a specialty cafeteria.

What is your experience?

That is, how much knowledge you have and to what extent do you want to know about coffee and the espresso machine.

How much are you willing to invest? Price is undoubtedly the first factor to consider, how much are you willing to spend to get a good espresso. You don’t always need the most expensive coffee maker to get the ones you’re looking for.

It is very important to reflect on the use that you are going to give your coffee maker, to wisely buy the perfect espresso machine for you. Other aspects to consider more technical would be:

The installation space. You must be aware of the size of the machine and also where you are going to place it. Many times this is overlooked and you end up with a coffee maker that more than bits of help, gets in the way.

How good are you using an espresso machine?

There are enthusiastic coffee drinkers who love to be in control of the entire process and enjoy the ritual of preparing their coffee. On the other hand, we have coffee fans who want to take the complexity out of making an espresso or cappuccino with the push of a button, so be sure to buy an automatic coffee maker with easy-to-understand controls and menus.

Who will be the consumer (you and your family, your colleagues, paying customers)?

Knowing this, you can consider the size of the coffee maker, the water capacity, the power. If it is for domestic use it is possible to choose a standard size one, for an office you may need a greater capacity for water and coffee beans, and for a cafeteria, you should opt for a commercial one with greater power.

You will prepare coffee based on coffee. Undoubtedly what differentiates a conventional filter coffee machine from an espresso machine in the variety of drinks you can create. If you are a cappuccino, latte, mocha coffee lover, you should consider factors such as the type of boiler, temperature, and pressure stability, as if you can prepare an espresso and heat the milk simultaneously.

It is also necessary that, before buying an espresso machine, you know the models and variations that exist, their capabilities, how each one works, and how each type of espresso machine differs from the other.

This is so because, each model of the machine and its way of preparing espresso, can be better adapted to the lifestyle you lead and the purpose you are going to give it.

What is an espresso machine?

Although an espresso machine is much more complex, basically and in short, an espresso machine is a coffee machine that works with steam. Through a boiler, pipes, pressure valves, and other devices exert pressure on the coffee. It is previously ground and pressed inside the filter holder of the machine, achieving maximum extraction of coffee, the famous espresso.

Parts of an espresso machine.

Most, if not all, espresso machines share the same features and parts. These are the most common elements that you can find:

Filter holder.

It is a 2-part piece, the basket or saucepan where you will put the ground coffee, and the filter holder itself that fits into the group of the machine.

Group and shower.

The group is the place where the portafilter is secured, it can come with a single group or several if it is a commercial espresso machine. The shower is a metal slit that is inside the group, and it is the water outlet that will soak the compacted coffee in the portafilter.

Water outlet.

It is a small nozzle where you can prepare American coffee or infusion drinks.

Lancet or vaporizer.

It allows you to extract the steam to emulsify or steam the milk used for latte or cappuccino.

6 Steps How to use an espresso machine.

Gaggia Coffee Maker Preparing Espresso Cup

When you purchase your espresso machine, then you face some problems using it. Although all of these coffee makers work similarly, the first step you should start with is reading the user manual, or at least giving it a quick review to be sure.

They can seem intimidating, especially if it’s your first espresso machine, but follow these 6 easy steps and we assure you that you will be enjoying your first espresso sooner than you imagine.

1. Plug in, turn on and preheat.

Espresso machines are electrical devices, so make sure you have a power source nearby to connect. Now you must preheat the machine, for this you just have to turn it on and wait for 15 to 20 minutes. The coffee maker must be hot before you can use it.

2. Make sure your espresso machine has water in it.

The coffee is almost 98% water, in general, espresso machines incorporate water tanks that you will find in the back with an opening to access and fill with water. Other models give you the possibility to connect them directly to the waterline. In one way or another, the important thing is that it must be filtered, fresh and quality water.

3. Grind the coffee beans.

The grinding of your coffee beans is one of the key factors to obtain a perfect cup of espresso, in fact, for a coffee professional, it is decisive to invest in a good coffee grinder, even more than in the espresso machine.

This is because the coffee grinder must allow the grind to be adjusted, as well as deliver a consistent and homogeneous ground coffee in each dose.

4. Load the coffee filter holder.

With ground coffee, you must now load the correct dose for proper extraction. By this, I mean that for each type of espresso a different amount of coffee is needed, for a standard espresso you usually use 7 – 10 grams of coffee, while for a double espresso you would use 14 – 18 grams. To control the grams of coffee, it is very useful to have a gram scale.

5. Leveling and pressing the coffee.

Now you want to distribute the coffee evenly, for this, you just have to tap it with your palm on each side of the portafilter to level and remove the air that has remained under the grind.

Once you have the ground coffee correctly distributed, what you should do is press it with the help of your coffee tamper. For this, you must place your arm at a 90-degree angle and press down firmly until you feel that the coffee is compacted.

If the extraction comes out too fast, it means that the press is not firm enough, or that you have ground the coffee too coarsely. What happens is that the water passes very quickly through the coffee bar causing a sub-extraction effect.

And if it takes too long, then it means that you have pressed more than necessary, or that the coffee grounds are too fine. Causing the opposite effect, over-extraction because the water takes longer to pass through the coffee bar.

The ideal is to achieve a homogeneous and consistent extraction creating a balance of flavors in your espresso. Practice, practice, and practice again and you can find the correct technique.

Some final advice is that you should not do a double pressing, that is, compact the coffee and then press again, you should not hit the filter holder once the coffee is compacted, otherwise you could create cracks in the tablet allowing a sub-extraction of coffee.

6. Extraction of your espresso.

Finally, it is time to prepare that glorious espresso, for this you must place the portafilter in the group of the machine and start the extraction process with the start button or lever. Here you will need to control some factors such as time, it is recommended that for a simple espresso, you should be able to get 2 ounces in a range of 25 to 30 seconds.

If you want to know how to prepare the perfect espresso, in the next section you will know in detail and in a simple way, everything you need to achieve the best cup of espresso.

5 Steps How to make the perfect espresso.

Make an espresso is not that difficult, even if you’ve never ventured to take one of these shots loaded with pure caffeine, let me tell you you drink a lot, as the basis for most of your favorite coffee drinks, such as the cappuccino or latte, are made from espresso  ☕.

However, being able to extract all the flavors and aromas so characteristic, and in an almost perfect way, is a complicated task, since to achieve this balance you will need to create the ideal environment to be able to extract the perfect espresso.

Assuming that you have already read how to use an espresso machine? We’ll go straight to the espresso extraction, so follow these 5 basic steps, plus some helpful tips, so you can be successful with your first espresso.

1. The right dose of coffee.

Remember that the degree of ground coffee is crucial to obtain the correct espresso. If the grind is too fine, you will have a burnt taste. Otherwise, if it is too thick, you will have a watery and tasteless coffee.

The amount of coffee that you put in the portafilter can vary but the most standard measurements are 7 grams for a simple espresso, 14 grams for a double, and 20 grams for a triple one.

It is also important to have fresh and freshly roasted coffee to ensure maximum extraction of all its properties.

2. Rinse the group from the machine.

Before starting with the extraction, it is important to clean the head of the group to eliminate impurities such as old coffee residues, for this, just let water pass without the filter holder in place. By rinsing the group you are also making sure to heat properly to have a uniform temperature during extraction.

You can also preheat the portafilter without any coffee, this is called a blank shot.

3. Extraction and time of espresso.

After loading and compacting the coffee inside the portafilter, start the extraction immediately, otherwise, the heat of the machine group could burn the surface of the coffee, which produces unpleasant notes in your cup.

The preparation time of espresso is between 25 – 30 seconds from the moment you start the extraction. Also, the espresso should start to fall into the cup after 5-7 seconds.

The best indicator that you have done a good job is the crema of your espresso, ideally a hazelnut cream with texture. If the extraction was too fast you will have a pale and thin cream, if it has been very slow, you will have a dark cream.

4. Serve and enjoy.

A step before the entire extraction process is to preheat the cup, with this you will ensure that the material, ceramic or glass, is at the same temperature as the espresso and that your drink does not get cold. For this, you just have to rinse the cup with hot water from the machine.

Now it only remains to serve and enjoy this glorious drink with a rich dessert, and remember that if you are a barista, you must make sure you serve your customers well.

5. Clean up and start over.

It is important to keep your place clean and tidy, especially if you have a cafeteria. Throw the coffee grounds or tablet into the grinder, clean the filter holder with a clean cloth, and rinse the head of the group again, in this way it will be much easier, faster, and more pleasant to make your next espresso.

How to clean an espresso machine.

Rigorous and constant maintenance is a fundamental part of having an espresso machine for correct operation and prolonging the life of the machine, as well as maintaining the flavor and quality of your coffee in each extraction as if it were the first time.

These are the essential aspects of a basic cleaning that you should perform to your espresso machine, some on a regular and daily basis, and others from time to time.

1. Clean the filter holders and filters.

You must make sure that the filter or the portafilter with coffee deposits are not dirty, otherwise, it will cause undesirable flavors in the drink.

This can be corrected with a  stainless steel sponge and hot water. You should clean and rub until any dirt is removed.

We advise you not to use cleaning products with aromas, since these smells could be transferred to the cup of coffee giving very unpleasant flavors.

2. Clean the vaporizer tubes or lancet.

It is important that after heating the milk and removing the jug, open the steam tap again to expel the accumulated milk inside the circuit, in addition to using a damp cloth to clean the milk that remains on the outside of the lancet.

It is also advisable to clean the outlet holes of the frother with a needle to prevent the milk from obstructing the passage of the vapor.

3. Cleaning the tray.

Another maintenance that you must carry out is cleaning the tray, for this, it is important not to throw the coffee grounds or other waste in the drain of the machine. Besides being very unpleasant to look at, finding a dirty tray.

4. Cleaning the body of the machine.

For this, just use hot water and a cloth, you must clean all the parts that could get dirty throughout the day, or during the workday.

5. Cleaning the group and the shower.

This should be weekly maintenance since if these outlets are dirty and clogged, they will produce a soft and bitter drink. The maintenance of the group consists of removing the pieces, and as you did with the filter holder, you should clean the area of any sediment of coffee.

The fall of the water in the showers must be uniform so that it generates a whirlpool allowing all the coffee loaded in the portafilter to be moistened.

For this you must use the backwash, this consists of placing a blind filter in the filter holder and then simulating as if you were making a coffee. This generates a circulation of water in the group that will clean the shower by releasing the rest of the coffee sediments stuck to the group.

Whether you are looking for an espresso machine for home or cafeteria use, it is important to make sure that it is an easy machine to clean according to the time you have for this step, otherwise, it could become a nuisance for you to carry out the proper maintenance costing you a lot of time and money.

Espresso Machine Parts

30 parts of the machine. How many did you already know?

As baristas we are used to using the espresso machine, we use its external parts as a consequence of what happens inside the machine.

But do we really know how an espresso machine works?

Before we go on to understand this, we must know more about its parts and how they work.

This is the first collaborative article in the history of Soy Barista and it is a glossary based on the basic operation of an espresso machine and not on new technologies (we will save that for later). This article would never have been achieved this way without the support of a coffee machine technician.

Group head:

Anyone can control it using the group button that allows the solenoid valve to open and the water to pass through.

Filter holder:

The part of the machine that contains the filter and that is placed inside the group to receive the water that will be transformed into an espresso.

Portafilter Spring –

A small spring that holds the baskets in place. So it is held in the portafilter if you attach it to a groove on the inner surface of the portafilter body.

Basket or Filter –

You can locate the filter inside the filter holder. These come in double and single sizes and their diameter depends on the model of the espresso machine. The most common is the 58mm one and the compactor choice is based on this.

Group packing:

It is the packing that seals the portafilter and the group head. Besides, it is inserted into a slot that is built into the group. If the portafilter is leaking, the group gasket is usually the part that needs to be replaced.

Jet breaker:

located within the group, it works together with the dispensing shower to distribute the water.

Delivery shower:

You can locate it inside the group, it is responsible for evenly dispersing the water for the preparation of espresso. It is a bad shower that will inevitably result in inconsistent espresso.

Group switch:

The button that sends an electrical signal to the group’s solenoid valve, allowing the water to flow towards the group head.

Hot water dispenser:

literally that’s its function too, to dispense hot water from the boiler.

Power switch:

You can turn the power switch and the selector to turn on the espresso machine. There are two steps and are marked with numbers. First to fill the boiler with water and then turn on the resistance and start heating.

Water level sight glass:

located on the front of the machine and indicates the water level in the boiler.

Lancet:

you can use the tool to steam milk.

Lancet tip:

It can disperse the steam that allows you to steam the milk. It can have from 1 to 5 holes.

Water pump:

It is composed of the water pump and the motor, they can be vibratory or rotary. It is responsible for reaching the right pressure for preparing the espresso (8 to 10 bars).

Boiler:

The tank where water and steam are stored.

Boiler resistance:

You can boil it in charge of heating the water and generating steam in the tank or boiler.

Steam key:

It is the key that activates the steam output to the lancet.

Cup warmer:

The surface on top of the espresso machine intended to preheat cups.

Water level probe:

Controls the water level. Normally it should contain around 50% to 60% water and the remainder steam.

Pressure switch:

At first, it controls the pressure and temperature of the boiler, which are directly related.

Boiler safety valve:

Triggers at 1.8 bar pressure to protect the equipment from an eventual accident. If the valve trips once, it must be replaced.

Vacuum or relief valve:

This is the vacuum or relief valve that equalizes the internal pressure of the boiler with the external pressure to avoid false pressure readings.

Water supply hose:

The one that leads the water from the pipe to the machine. It has to be odorless and tasteless food grade.

Drain hose:

The hose that discharges the excess water from the coffee machine.

Liquid waste tray:

Connected to the liquid waste hose, it is responsible for directing them to the hose.

Boiler filling solenoid valve:

It opens the water flow to the boiler. It opens when the level probe indicates a lack of water and once it has the proper water level, it interrupts the signal.

Group solenoid valves:

It is the one that allows the flow of water to the head of the group.

Unidirectional boiler and group valve: It allows the passage of cold water and does not allow it to return once hot.

Steam pressure manometer:

So, it is the one that registers the levels of steam pressure that should be between 1 and 1.5 bars.

Water pressure gauge:

Besides, it is the one that registers the pressure levels generated by the motor pump, which should be 8 to 10 bars.

This glossary is far from including all the parts of the machine but we hope you have learned some new concepts. Do you know any others that we can add?
