Although it is very easy to fix, since you basically only need water and coffee beans, what makes coffee so bad sometimes? Among other things, it may be that the final product is too strong, too watery, too low in coffee, or too hot for a long time. This is why office coffee is usually the worst: coffee maker stays for hours, the coffee tastes burnt, and when you finally get there, you are left with something as sweet as mud.

The key to a large cup of coffee is chemistry. Your coffee contains a variety of acids which is why bad coffee tastes bitter and sour. So what is the key to making a good cup of coffee that tastes better than the one you bought – and paid for – in your favorite coffee shop? The answer is cold coffee.

Sweet taste

Known in English as cold coffee, cold-brewed coffee has a very sweet taste, because the sweet flavors are extracted from the sweet acids, leaving out the bitter acids.

However, when some people think of coffee made using this method, they think of a long and tedious process or specialized coffee makers. However, you do not need to invest in expensive equipment to enjoy delicious coffee. You can easily make cold coffee at home, and then mix it with milk, sugar, cream, or whatever you think is perfect for the perfect effect.

Although you prepare it in this “cold” way, we are not talking about producing ice-cold coffee only on those summer days, but you can give it hot or cold. Plus, you can keep it for more than a week without losing its flavor, and preparing it will take you about 10 minutes of your time if you know how to do it.

Here we explain step by step how to make cold coffee better and cheaper than in a restaurant.

What you need:

  • Coffee beans, or fresh ground
  • Coldwater
  • A good strainer or sieve
  • Cotton cloth
  • Crystal pot

How to make cold coffee

Start by grinding or grinding coffee beans. Do not grind them very well, they should have grains, about the size of kosher salt. It is not a good idea to use ground coffee (like the one you can use in your coffee machine), as the essence will be overdone, resulting in a bitter taste.


Mix coffee and water.

Pour four cups of water into the pot and add the coffee. For a regular drink, add 1/2 cup of coffee grounds, which produce a 1: 8 ratio of coffee and water. For a strong drink, add up to 1 cup of ground coffee. This is a personal choice, but both Blue Bottle and Kicking Horse Coffee suggest a 1: 4 ratio.

Refrigerate the mixture for 12-15 hours to process. You can prepare it in the afternoon, put it in the fridge, and it will be ready the next morning.

Strain the coffee and water mixture with a fine strainer, covered with a cotton cloth or cheesecloth to remove all particles. And that’s it! You already have a delicious cold-brewed coffee.

Remember this is a concentrated coffee, so you should not drink it sparingly. To serve it, add water or milk to clean it. Again, this is a personal choice, but it is best to start at the bottom, with a scale of 1 to 1, and work your way up from there.

In our test, I added vanilla beans to this mixture, 1.5 cups of milk, and 1/2 cup sugar, and it was delicious. You can give it hot, or cold in ice cubes.

You can keep this mixture of cold coffee and milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator, for a period not exceeding two or three days. Note that if you add milk, water, or other ingredients, this shortens the shelf life of the mixture, so you should eat it immediately.

But if you leave the roasted coffee cold without adding anything to it, you can keep it for a week, or even longer, before its quality deteriorates.

Tips and Warnings

Use filtered water to get the best results. You can also use regular bottled water, but filtered water is the best option.
Even if you are tempted to remove the mixture from the refrigerator before the procedure is over, wait at least 12 hours, or longer. You will be satisfied that the wait is worth it.

You can add a variety of ingredients to make your feeling even better. Try it with thick and steamed milk, cinnamon, vanilla, dulce de leche, cream, brown sugar, honey, chocolate, coconut milk, almond milk… many opportunities!
As we have said, this is a concentrated coffee, so cold ripe coffee is often stronger than traditional hot coffee.
